Public Art Proposal

Bloomington, Indiana

XCube emerges from my artistic inquiry into how mathematical structure, particularly those rooted in tessellation, symmetry, and spatial logic, can be used as a conceptual, material, and experiential medium in art and design. Conceptually, The project begins with the Cairo pentagonal tessellation; a geometric tiling admired for its ability to fill a plane seamlessly. By focusing on a colinear version of this tessellation, I examined how a fundamentally two-dimensional pattern might expand into three-dimensional space. Each pentagonal tile was reimagined as a bisymmetric hendecahedron, an 11-faced polyhedron capable of filling space volumetrically.

Previously, I have used a similar hendecahedron to a public art pavilion that was designed in response to Eero Saarinen’s North Christian Church.

Here, the updated hendecahedron was updated and then repeated and aggregated to resolve into a perfect cube. Materially, XCube will be constructed from aluminum perforated thin plates that are laser cut and CNC folded to create physcial material precision and structural strength based on the  abstract polyhedral geometry. Experientially, Xcube is a shared space where community members can step inside and interact. During the day, the perforation creates an interplay of light and shadow based on pentagonal lattice patterns. At night, programmable LEDs allow visitors to co-create XCube shifting hues based on app and voice inputs. In addition, an integrated misting systems cools the interior and enhances summer comfort for visitors.
